QCE - About Standard and Norm

British Retail Consortium

BRC Global Standard for Food safety

Background of the standard: In 1998, the British Retailers, through the British Retail Consortium (BRC) introduced third party auditing of private label suppliers based on an agreed, detailed standard. The supplier pays for the audit themselves and has ownership of the report.

The standard was developed to assure British Retailers that their suppliers complied with their requirements, and provides a tool that could help them to defend themselves in court in the case of challenge against a private label product (due diligence). The current standard is well established and third party bodies must be accredited to EN 45011 or must prove that they are in the process of becoming accredited.(see list of BRC registrated certification bodies on: www.brc.org.uk)

BRC storage and distribution

Not only production, also the way of storage and transport is important to guarantee safe products.

BRC has developed a new standard for these specific demands.
Within that standard there are 4 chapters:

  • Storage
  • Distribution

  • Services

A certificate according that standard is especially important for organisation working together with BRC certified companies, but also to underline their activities for due diligence.

International Food Standard

IFS Logistic

Transport and storage of food will be critical issues also with BRC or IFS.

In the current standard it is not forseen, to evaluate transport or storage organisations.

For that reason IFS has defined a standard for a comparable evaluation of organisations working the area of logistic.

Due to that, better Quality, more transparency and safety will be given to the consumer in future.

International Organization for Standardization

ISO 22000

Background of the standard: When ISO 9001/2/3:1994 was developed, there was a clear demand for a codification of the Code of Practice (Codex Alimentarius) 1969. An international comparable norm could not be developed at that time. Therefore various national standards did appear (Dutch HACCP...).

Due to the revision of ISO 9000, such as political changes (east opening) again the call for a harmonised Food Safety management System came up.

The current standard is built up closely to the ISO 9001 system and refers to best practices recommended by Codex Alimentarius. It only may be certified by certification bodies accredited according to EN45012.

Designed for: Producers of Food Products, Feed producer, Packaging Producer, Transport and Storage Organisations, Producers of Food Additives and Process aids, Canteens, Restaurants and all other areas where food is handled.

Content standard:

  • Quality System
  • Responsibility of Management
  • Resource management
  • Product Realisation (incl. HACCP)
  • Validation, Verification and Improvements of Food Safety

Controlado por FACE

Controlado por FACE

Celiaic disease - is an illness, where the body can not digest gluten. Food industry has reacted on the fact and produces more and more specific food without gluten.

This standard has been developed especially for manufacturers of gluten free products.

At the evaluation any kind of possible contamination is under focus, but not only during production, but also at transport and storage.

Evaluation according to this standard provides the right to use a special logo on all products controlled.
